Cleveland Food Bank braces for surge, calls for volunteers as SNAP funds stall

CLEVELAND, Ohio – With 190,000 Cuyahoga County SNAP recipients at risk of losing benefits starting this weekend, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is asking volunteers to step up and help meet what it expects will be a surge in demand for groceries and meals.

The food bank said it’s preparing for a “large increase in neighbor turnout” at its S. Waterloo Healthy Choice Food Market, fueled both by the ongoing government shutdown and the approaching holiday season. It’s now expanding volunteer shifts throughout November and recruiting up to 40 more people per shift to meet the expected demand.

To start, the food bank put out an email calling for immediate help next week:

  • From 10 a.m. to noon (5–10 volunteers), from noon to 2 p.m. (20–25 volunteers), and from 4–6:30 p.m. (5–10 volunteers needed) on Nov. 6

But demand is only expected to grow as funds remain stalled…
