Cleveland Police Exchange Fire with Armed Suspect Near West Side Market, No Serious Injuries Reported

In a confrontation that escalated rapidly on the streets of Ohio City, Cleveland police officers responded to a break-in at a store near the popular West Side Market early Wednesday, culminating in an officer firing at an armed suspect, as reported by WKYC. The Cleveland Division of Police stated officers arrived around 5:17 a.m. to find a male suspect allegedly trying to force his way into a store with what appeared to be a long metal object. Their presence did little to deter the suspect, who then produced a pickaxe from a nearby bag and advanced toward officers despite repeated commands to stop.

After an unsuccessful attempt to subdue the suspect with a Taser, one officer discharged their firearm, though the suspect was not struck and instead fled on foot, authorities said he was apprehended near West 25th Street and Abbey Avenue, as detailed by Cleveland19, the suspect was then taken to a local hospital for evaluation while one officer sustained a minor injury and also received medical attention, details surrounding the motive and the identity of the alleged perpetrator have not been publicly disclosed but the investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police Force Investigation Team is ongoing.
