Man sentenced in 2023 Mentor jewelry store burglary

A man involved in a string of jewelry store burglaries across the nation, including one in Mentor in 2023, has been sentenced to 57 months in prison.

David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Jorge Giovanni Escobar Gonzalez, a 41-year-old citizen of Colombia last residing in Kissimmee, Florida, was sentenced this week by U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for his involvement in an organized jewelry theft ring that targeted mall-based stores and kiosks.

According to court documents and statements made in court, from May 2023 through April 2024, Escobar Gonzalez and several other Colombian nationals burglarized jewelry stores and kiosks in malls and then transported the stolen property or the proceeds from it across state lines, a news release stated…
