RTA’s tone-deaf tax hike would fail with voters. When do we remake transit for modern times?

Cleveland’s public transit system is in financial freefall, but the Today in Ohio podcast can’t believe it sees a solution in asking voters for a tax increase at the very moment angry taxpayers might go to the polls to abolish property taxes.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is bleeding cash, losing riders, and quickly depleting its reserves. Leila Atassi said on Monday’s episode that RTA plans to pull another $44 million from reserves next year alone, dropping its financial cushion from nearly $120 million two years ago to $35 million by the end of 2026.

But it’s what comes after 2026 that has RTA leadership floating an idea that Today in Ohio host Chris Quinn called “cockamamie” – going to voters for either a higher sales tax or even introducing a property tax…
