Attack on Cleveland EMS worker prompts free self defense trainings from University Circle Police officer

CLEVELAND — After a recent assault on a Cleveland paramedic made local and national headlines, a University Circle police officer is offering free self defense sessions for EMS workers and nurses.

“The main objective here is to arm these EMT workers, EMS workers, paramedics with the ability to defend themselves if need be,” UCPD Officer Jeremy Prokop said.

Jonathan Wearstler, commander of operations for Cleveland’s Division of EMS, said he’s noticed an uptick in violence against EMS workers in recent years. The city reports roughly 30 assaults on paramedics since 2023, with 12 of those incidents happening this year alone…
