Elyria to add 100 police cameras under new 10-year agreement

ELYRIA, Ohio — Elyria City Council has unanimously approved a plan to expand police camera surveillance throughout the city, adding about 100 new cameras to the police department’s existing network of 150 streaming devices.

The council voted Dec. 15 to authorize a 10-year agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. at an annual cost of $17,000. Safety Service Director Chris Pyanowski said the deal is an add-on to the city’s current 10-year, $5.4 million contract with Axon for body-worn and in-car camera systems.

Police Capt. Michael Groomes told council members the expansion will broaden the department’s use of Axon’s Fusus technology, which supports the department’s crime reduction efforts. He said the existing camera network has already proven instrumental in solving several cases, including a hit-and-run at Reaser Pointe Crossing and a robbery at Kay Jewelers…
