Cleveland Councilman voted to crack down on landlords — while his own rentals broke the rules

CLEVELAND, Ohio — City Councilman Kevin Bishop has ignored Cleveland’s rental and lead-safety laws at his rental properties for years, even though he voted to toughen the city’s laws for other landlords to help prevent childhood lead poisoning, cleveland.com has found.

Records show Bishop, who has served on council since 2017, has owned four rental homes in Cleveland for more than a decade and has failed to certify them as safe from lead poisoning or register them as rentals at City Hall.

When questioned by cleveland.com, Bishop acknowledged that he has not registered his properties, saying it’s on his to-do list. He said he lost his property management help and has been “in a tight spot as far as getting all my stuff together.”…
