New Ohio law adjusts cutoff date for starting kindergarten

CLEVELAND (WJW) – A recently passed Ohio law, HB 114, will officially take effect in March and have an impact on the 2026-2027 school year.

Previously, school districts could choose either August 1 or Sept. 30 to be the cutoff date for a child to have to be five years old and be eligible for kindergarten enrollment.

The new law will now make the cutoff to be five by whatever the school district’s first day of school is.
