Massive crack opens on Lake Erie’s ice

CLEVELAND (WJW) – A massive crack formed on Lake Erie’s ice on Sunday.

FOX 8 Meteorologists said the crack is about 80 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide. Satellite imagery shows it’s located about 5 to 10 miles off the Cleveland coast.

Meteorologist Scott Sabol said cracks in the ice often form when there are shifting winds. He said more cracks are likely to develop Monday and especially Tuesday as temperatures warm and winds come in from the southwest.

Lake Erie is currently at about 95% ice covered. The lake has been at least 90% covered in ice the past 16 days, which is the longest stretch since the winter of 2018-2019, according to FOX 8 Meteorologists.
