Willoughby Hills officials monitoring Chagrin River for ice jams: ‘Very dangerous situation’

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio (WJW) – With warmer temperatures arriving in Northeast Ohio, officials in Willoughby Hills are closely monitoring the Chagrin River.

Willoughby Hills Fire Chief Robert Gandee said days of above freezing temperatures could increase the risk of an ice jam.

“Usually when you have temperatures above 30s, 40s, even in the 50s, usually by day three or four, we’re starting to see flooding events,” he said.

Right now, there isn’t an ice jam on the Chagrin River, but thick ice still covers much of the water, with the river flowing underneath. Gandee said as snow melts and runoff enters the river, it can push large sheets of ice downstream…
