Mayor Bibb’s $50,000 trip to Martha’s Vineyard raises transparency questions

Most Clevelanders will never set foot on Martha’s Vineyard. Their mayor apparently can’t go without a police entourage. Columbus’ mayor answers to 2 1/2 times the voters of Cleveland’s. He goes to conferences and skips the security detail.

Last August, Mayor Bibb spent $50,000 in taxpayer money so that he and his security detail could attend a networking summit in Martha’s Vineyard. That’s hard to justify when Cleveland voters are dodging island-sized potholes.

Maybe schmoozing with the rich and famous brings grants and investments to the city. But, if the ROI is so impressive, why hide the receipt? When Fox 8 asked what the trip cost, City Hall stonewalled records requests for months. The numbers only came out after a court complaint…
