Power outages in Northeast Ohio: 2K in Cuyahoga; 1.7K in Erie

(WJW) — As strong wind gusts as high as 60 mph buffeted Northeast Ohio on Friday, March 13, thousands of FirstEnergy customers lost power.

The utility company just after 10 a.m. reported10,678 outages statewide, including:

  • 4,319 outages in Cuyahoga County, including:
    • 1,117 in Parma
    • 2,170 in Strongsville
    • 602 in Westlake
  • 1,691 outages in Erie County, including:
    • 1,529 in Vermilion Township
  • 2,033 in Lorain, including
    • 534 in Elyria Township
    • 449 in Lorain
    • 915 in Sheffield Township

The utility on social media Thursday wrote:

“A severe windstorm will move through our service area beginning early Friday and into Saturday, with the strongest winds expected Friday afternoon when winds could exceed 50–65 mph in some areas.

“To help manage the weather safely and efficiently, we’ve activated our around-the-clock incident command structure so teams across our service area can coordinate restoration work, equipment needs and field support as conditions change. These simple steps can help ensure you’re ready before the winds ramp up:

  • Sign up for alerts to get updates in case you lose power
  • Build an emergency kit
  • Know how to report an outage
  • Bring in or tie down patio furniture, trash cans, grills, decorations and other loose objects”
