First Hinckley buzzard of 2026 makes an early arrival

HINCKLEY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The first buzzard spotted at Hinckley Reservation this year wasted no time making its grand entrance. By the time most people started arriving for the 8 a.m. kickoff to the Cleveland Metroparks annual Buzzard Day at Buzzard’s Roost in the Hickley Reservation March 15, the bird-of-the-hour had already been there for 12 minutes.

“It’s early,” Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Nature Center Manager Min Keung said of the 7:48 a.m. first sighting. “We are usually expecting them between 8 a.m.and 10 a.m. I think it may be because it’s warm.”

While the rocky recesses of Whipp’s Ledges and Worden’s Ledges in the Hinckley Reservation, along with an ample supply of animal carrion in the area may also explain why these birds call the Hinckley area home, weather can never be underestimated, in Keung’s opinion…
