Cleveland traffic tickets drop by more than half over last decade, raising concerns about enforcement and safety

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police issued less than half as many traffic tickets last year as they did a decade ago, a decline some city leaders say may be contributing to crime and disorder on neighborhood streets.

Data presented to city officials shows citations fell from nearly 9,000 in 2016 to about 3,000 in 2025 — fueling concerns from some who describe it as a lack of enforcement. During an interview with 3News, Cleveland City Council Safety Committee Chair Michael Polensek questioned the state of traffic enforcement.
