10-year-old who allegedly brought gun to school released to grandparent, given curfew — prosecutors object

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — A 10-year-old boy, who police say brought a gun to an elementary school, was released to his grandmother and given a curfew, despite objections from prosecutors.

Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court records show the boy is facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon, having or bringing a gun into a school safety zone, and aggravated menacing. Police say the child brought the gun to Barack Obama Elementary School on April 9.

Multiple Cleveland police officers indicted: I-Team

Maple Heights police body camera video obtained by the Fox 8 I-Team, shows a school employee telling an officer that the child came to the school with the gun and took it into a bathroom. No injuries were reported.

Maple Heights police say they want to know how the child obtained the gun. Detectives are continuing to investigate, and additional charges could be filed.

According to the documents filed in juvenile court that explain the charges, the gun was equipped for rapid firing, and it had an extended magazine.
