‘My son rose above’: Family remembers Arvada hero 5 years after Olde Town shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KDVR) – It’s been five years since the shooting in Olde Town Arvada that claimed the lives of three people, including a police officer, a gunman and a bystander who stopped the attack. The family of that good Samaritan, Johnny Hurley, says they don’t want the community to forget him.

On June 21, 2021, a gunman walked through Olde Town Arvada and aimed his weapon at police cars, shooting and killing Arvada police Officer Gordon Beesley.

Police said the gunman had a hatred for law enforcement, but his plans for a mass shooting were likely cut short when 40-year-old Johnny Hurley saw the gunman from a nearby Army supply store, pulled out his own gun and shot the suspect several times…
