(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo) is mourning the passing of its 6-year-old moose, Atka, who passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 22 following a procedure that required anesthesia.
Many may know Atka as the moose who was missing a toe after having it removed for health reasons several years ago. CMZoo explained that about three-and-a-half years ago, Atka had a toe removed to prevent progressive bone degradation in his hoof. The amputation stopped the bone degradation, saving his leg and his life. CMZoo said Atka’s quality of life was good after the amputation, and he was even seen frolicking in his habitat after receiving additional hoof support adhered to his foot…
