Arrest made in fatal October 2023 crash at Academy and Platte

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said an arrest has been made in the fatal crash that happened in the overnight hours of Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023.

According to CSPD, on Oct. 28 at around 11 p.m. officers were called to the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and East Platte Avenue about a two-vehicle crash. Police said one of the passengers, identified as 24-year-old Mar’Layza West, was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene.

The investigation revealed that an SUV traveling on N. Academy Blvd. was trying to turn left onto E. Platte Ave. when a car traveling south on N. Academy Blvd. was allegedly driving recklessly and collided with the SUV.

Based on their findings, police issued an arrest warrant for the driver of the southbound car identified as 23-year-old Jacinto Gonzalez-Perez.

Gonzalez-Perez turned himself into the El Paso County Jail on Jan. 26 and is facing charges of Vehicular Homicide and Vehicular Assault.
