(COLORADO SPRINGS) — If word hasn’t quite gotten around to you yet, here is a quick spoiler alert: Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow Friday morning in Pennsylvania. That means he’s calling for an early Spring!
But is Phil the only animal that can forecast the weather? The FOX21 Storm Team did some digging, and it turns out that Southern Colorado has its own special furry forecaster – except this one is a little bit more prickly.
Waffles, a resident at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, is an eight-year-old cape porcupine. She was born at a facility in Indiana with her brother Flapjack before being moved here. Waffles’ unique name comes from the fact that her species is said to smell a bit like maple syrup.
Just like Phil, Waffles had a big decision to make at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and she spent the afternoon with meteorologists Ryan Matoush and Megan Montero making some last-minute calculations. When the time came, she made her decision.
Much to the crowd’s delight, Waffles chose early Spring!
