(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said a woman sustained serious injuries after jumping from the third story of an apartment complex to escape a fire on Friday, Aug. 30.

According to CSFD, on Friday a little after 6 a.m. fire crews responded to a fire at the FirTree Apartments on Radiant Drive off of South Academy Boulevard. Due to the size of the fire, a second alarm was ordered for the fire calling in additional resources.

CSFD said multiple ladder rescues were performed to help those living in the apartments get out of the building. One woman jumped from a third-story window to escape the fire, she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

CSFD determined the fire was caused by a burner on the stove accidentally being turned on. CSFD said kitchen fires are one of the leading causes of fires that fire crews respond to. CSFD recommends ensuring all combustibles are away from the stove and oven area, and that all appliances are turned off before leaving the home.
