While responding to a distress call, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers on Saturday night fatally shot a man after saying he was suicidal and pointed a gun at deputies, according to sheriff officials.
At around 6:20 p.m., the Lone Tree Police Department received a call from a man who said he was suicidal, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s officials said the call led deputies and Lone Tree police officers to an apartment complex near Peoria Street and Roosevelt Lane in unincorporated Douglas County.
Upon arrival, a crisis response team engaged with the man who, at some point during the interaction, fired a gunshot within his apartment, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a video describing the incident.
“Crisis community response team officers continued to talk to the subject to deescalate the situation and to have him come down and meet deputies,” Weekly said.
Around 7:20 p.m., the man came downstairs carrying a handgun, fired a shot in the air, then pointed it at sheriff’s deputies, according to Weekly.
