19-year-old shoots and kills charging wolf after teens reportedly got “surrounded”

An ongoing investigation into a Wisconsin wolf killing is sure to draw interested eyes from Coloradans, after a teen shot a wolf who was reportedly charging a group of young hunters.

According to a report from Wisconsin Public Radio, the killing took place on September 21. Several OutThere Colorado readers have since reached out to express concerns of similar situations having potential to take place in the Centennial State.

The Wisconsin situation unfolded on public land in Oneida County, about 175 miles north of Madison. A group of three teen hunters, including a 13-year-old, were in a duck blind when they noticed a wolf approaching their group. The teens attempted to haze the wolf away with loud sounds, but the wolf kept getting closer.

At that point, the 13-year-old spotted another wolf behind their group at a distance of about five yards. That’s when the 19-year-old reportedly grabbed his gun and shot the animal in the face, killing it and reporting the situation to wildlife authorities shortly after it occurred. Additional witness reports noted that five wolves were “surrounding” the teens, with four more wolves in the general area.
