Downtown Colorado Springs officer-involved shooting suspect identified

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that the man who died as a result of the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, July 5, has been identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s office.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, CSPD’s 911 Communication Center received a report of a disturbance in the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue for an individual displaying a firearm near the closing time of several downtown nightclubs. Officers investigated the report and then cleared the call.

At around 1:49 a.m., officers monitoring downtown surveillance cameras found a man who matched the suspect’s description and noted he appeared to be armed. Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to contact him. As the officers approached, the suspect turned, ran, and reached toward his waistband. One officer discharged their weapon and struck the suspect.
