Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Welcomes the Birth of Critically Endangered Western Lowland Gorilla

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs recently welcomed an exciting new addition—a critically endangered Western Lowland gorilla baby! Born on Monday, July 21st, to third-time mom Asha, the little one is already thriving. Both mom and baby are doing well and spending plenty of bonding time together.

While the baby enjoys snuggles with mom and some sweet moments with first-time dad Goma, the Zoo reports that the newborn is already reaching key developmental milestones, like nursing and clinging; signs that he or she is strong and healthy.

What an adorable little one! The Zoo hasn’t been able to confirm if the baby is a boy or a girl, and explained in the video’s caption, “The sex and weight of the gorilla baby are not known yet. As long as keepers observe that baby and mom are doing well, they will continue to let Asha take the lead on providing care.”…
