Bear Activity Surges in Colorado Springs as Wildlife Officials Urge Vigilance

Colorado Springs, CO — As fall approaches, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is reporting a surge in bear activity across the Front Range, including neighborhoods in and around Colorado Springs. Black bears are entering hyperphagia, a seasonal phase where they consume up to 20,000 calories daily in preparation for winter hibernation.

This biological drive often leads bears into urban areas in search of easy food sources. CPW officials are urging residents to secure trash bins, remove bird feeders, and avoid leaving pet food outdoors. The agency warns that bears who find food near homes may lose their natural fear of humans, increasing the risk of dangerous encounters.
