(PIKES PEAK REGION, Colo.) — The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) shared the story of a dog staying at its kennel, who shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
On Thursday, Oct. 2, HSPPR talked about Elmer, who initially appears to be a timid, quiet, anxious dog curled in the corner, eyes darting nervously at the clanging of food bowls or the barks echoing from every direction. His tail stays low, his ears flatten, and it appears that he didn’t care if anyone noticed him at all.
“But here’s the truth: Elmer cares so much it hurts,” wrote HSPPR. “He cares so deeply about people that being away from them feels unbearable. The kennel isn’t just a small space to him; it’s a reminder that he’s alone.”
But open the kennel door and the story changes, according to HSPPR. Clip on Elmer’s leash, and he almost becomes a different dog; his tail starts wagging, his eyes brighten, and he is bounding towards you, eager to press his whole body against your side. HSPPR writes that Elmer is a “velcro dog” in the truest, sweetest sense. He wants to be where you are, doing whatever you’re doing, every step of the way.
“There are so many dogs like Elmer. Dogs who, in their kennels, look “too shy” or “too scared.” Dogs, people walk right past, not realizing that this quiet creature is hiding a heart bursting with love. Elmer’s true self doesn’t live in a kennel; it shines the moment you step outside with him,” wrote HSPPR…
