Detective Marissa Williams of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office spoke at the 3rd Annual Financial Crime Conference in Ontario, Canada. The event was organized by the Ontario Provincial Police. Detective Williams described an investigation from 2019 to 2025 that uncovered a fraud scheme with more than 20 suspects. The scheme targeted over 260 victims in the United States. Losses totaled more than $2.5 million from fraudulent vehicle and farm equipment sales on Craigslist. The suspects used a fake ‘eBay escrow’ system to deceive buyers.
