Teller County Commissioners Thank Residents for Community Support During 43-Day Shutdown

The Teller County Board of County Commissioners issued a statement thanking the community after a 43-day shutdown. During the shutdown, more than 3,000 residents lost SNAP benefits. Hundreds of federal workers, both active and furloughed, did not receive paychecks. The shutdown increased demand on the county’s five food banks and other social programs. County officials, first responders, schools, faith-based groups, and the Sheriff’s Office coordinated their response.

The county set up centralized control for food distribution. This helped keep food pantries stocked and ensured food reached those in need. Officials created a central SNAP information and donation page. They provided daily updates and used GIS mapping to help residents find resources. These steps supported clear communication and coordination during the shutdown.

Community members and organizations donated about $150,000, including support from the El Pomar Foundation. These funds and county resources were used to buy beef, turkeys, freezers, and other supplies.
