In the 1930s, Colorado Springs was a city of culture and refinement, home to a permanent population of about 40,000. The city was known for its unique park system, including the famous Garden of the Gods, artistic cottages, beautiful residences, and elegant mansions. With wide streets and broad parked avenues, the city was also the commercial center for Cripple Creek, which had produced over $40 million in gold. The climatic conditions were unequalled, with summers characterized by blue skies, snow-tempered breezes, cool invigorating days, and restful nights.
