Born at Altitude: Breathing challenges Colorado newborns face

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Many babies born in Colorado face unique struggles because of the altitude, and some may even need to go home on oxygen while their tiny lungs adjust. It’s a challenge that especially affects babies born in high mountain towns and in Colorado Springs, where the elevation is above 6,000 feet.

This has impacted KKTV’s Morning Anchor Erika Ferrando, who spent a week in the NICU with her baby girl and then a month at home with her baby on oxygen. The challenge impacts many Colorado Springs parents, also including former KKTV Morning Producer Jose Maldonado, whose full-term baby had low oxygen. He spent three days in the NICU and three months at home on oxygen.

“To hear it can affect a baby, that’s brand new to me,” Maldonado said. “I brought him into the newsroom and everyone’s like, ‘what’s wrong, what’s wrong?’ And I was like, well, it’s the altitude, he’s not adjusting to it just yet.”…
