Colorado Springs LDS Temple faces pushback sparking hundreds of comments, council passes proposal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (ABC4) — A temple belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, slated to be built in Colorado Springs, is facing pushback from residents who argue the building’s spire would be too high and too bright.

The temple was first announced by the late president of the Church, Russel M. Nelson in October 2023. After the building’s proposal was approved by the city’s planning commission just two years after the announcement, an appeal was quickly made to strike it down. Church members quickly came to the temple’s defense before the city council.

Opposition to a ‘mega temple’

The temple’s proposal included over 18 acres of property in the Flying Horse neighborhood of Colorado Springs. The proposal went before the city council Tuesday morning, sparking comment from both sides.
