Driver and 4 rescuers hospitalized after vehicle plunges into frigid Colorado lake

During rush hour on February 19, Colorado Springs rescue teams responded to the report of a vehicle that had become fully submerged in Prospect Lake at Memorial Park.

Per reporting from The Gazette, personnel from the local police and fire departments arrived at the scene about five minutes after an initial report about the incident was received at 5:03 p.m., then able to free the sole occupant of the vehicle about two minutes later. The occupant was reported to be in critical condition once rescued, transported to a local hospital. Per Ajia Cuevas’ Gazette report, two police officers and two firefighters were also transported to receive medical care due to cuts and hypothermia.

Details related to how the vehicle got into the lake haven’t been released, though it was noted that the car was traveling westbound on Airport Road, ultimately crossing South Union Boulevard and then entering the water. If one were to continue traveling straight past the end of Airport Road opposed to turning where the road T-bones with South Union Boulevard, it’s about 450 feet to the water of Prospect Lake…
