Douglas County commissioners pass shoplifting reporting ordinance

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Douglas County Board of Commissioners passed a new ordinance to support law enforcement and crime prevention that would require businesses to report all shoplifting incidents.

On Tuesday, the commissioners held the second reading, with all three commissioners voting in favor to pass the ordinance.

There was a bit of public comment from people in the community who didn’t want the ordinance to pass; some of them stated the ordinance didn’t take into consideration small businesses, only big box stores.

The ordinance is set to go into place on April 4 of this year. Under the new ordinance, the county will fine stores that don’t report shoplifting within four days. After four days, the store will owe $50 a day with a maximum fine of $1,000…
