Community opposition and legal battles stalled progress

The proposed travel center, which would have sat at the intersection of Interstate 25 and County Line Road north of Colorado Springs, sparked fierce debate from the moment plans were revealed. Local residents and conservation advocates rallied against the project, arguing it threatened open space, strained water resources and clashed with Palmer Lake’s small-town character. Public meetings frequently overflowed with residents on both sides of the issue.

The dispute escalated into legal action and political upheaval, including a lawsuit over land-use procedures, the resignation of the town’s mayor, and a recall election targeting trustees who supported the proposal.
