Peter Horry, county’s namesake, led Revolutionary War regiment

Peter Horry, the man for whom the county is named, was an important figure in the Revolutionary War in South Carolina, serving with the more famous “Swamp Fox,” General Francis Marion.

Horry, the son of a French Huguenot rice planter, has been called Marion’s right-hand man, as noted in the 250th exhibit at the Horry County Museum in Conway.

Horry was commissioned a captain on June 12, 1775, a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

After his commission by the Provincial Congress of South Carolina, Horry served in the same regiment as Marion, who outranked Horry. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Horry and Marion were colleagues as planters in the landed gentry class…
