Analysis: Gamecocks allow Wildcats to hang around, suffer all-too-familiar result

South Carolina received another reminder of how thin its margin for error has become. The Gamecocks suffered a close 35-34 overtime loss to the No. 24 Kentucky Wildcats Saturday night. The loss exposed small mistakes and missed opportunities that have plagued South Carolina’s three-game losing streak.

South Carolina had not played in an overtime game since 2019, when they pulled off a double-overtime win over No. 3 Georgia.

The Gamecocks led Kentucky 17-0 with less than three minutes left in the second quarter, yet wound up with the familiar sting of defeat. This time, it was in spite of an encouraging all-around performance by senior quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Sellers escapability

Sellers’ athleticism paved the way for many of the Gamecocks’ points this Saturday, avoiding potential sacks and extending plays. He accounted for 373 yards of offense for the Gamecocks, including 147 yards on the ground.
