Are strong winds about to disrupt your weekend plans? The National Weather Service has issued two separate advisories, one for lakes across South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 10, and another for a stretch of desert along the California and Arizona border on Sunday, Oct. 11.
Lake wind advisory in South Carolina
The Columbia office of the National Weather Service issued this advisory early Friday. It runs from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and covers 18 counties across the Midlands, including Lancaster, Orangeburg, Chesterfield, McCormick, Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw, Edgefield, Saluda, Lexington, Richland, Lee, Aiken, Sumter, Barnwell, Calhoun, Clarendon and Bamberg.
Forecasters expect east winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Those conditions can whip up rough waves on area lakes and create hazardous conditions for small craft. Boaters are urged to use extra caution, since strong winds and choppy water can overturn small boats.
