In a moving and inspirational ceremony, seven-year-old Jack Timmerman, bravely battling the rare genetic disorder Batten disease, had his dream fulfilled as he was officially sworn in as an honorary police officer on February 2.

Jack’s journey with Batten disease, diagnosed in August 2023, has brought about progressive challenges, including almost complete loss of vision. Nevertheless, Jack, a vibrant member of Lake Murray Elementary’s safety patrol, exudes an infectious love of life and an unwavering spirit. Jack’s teacher, recognizing his passion for law enforcement, reached out to Sheriff Leon Lott, who played a pivotal role in making Jack’s dream of becoming a police officer a reality.

The Timmerman family, well-known for embracing the mantra “We do hard things,” has received tremendous support from the community since Jack’s diagnosis.
