The South Carolina Department of Transportation is preparing for potential impacts related to the tropical system developing off our coast. Crews in the affected areas have begun preparing and are ready to respond.
A tropical depression was upgraded to Tropical Storm Chantal Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms associated with Chantal are forecast to reach the coastal sections of the Carolinas and become more frequent later Saturday as the cyclone begins to interact with a weak coastal front. The center of the tropical cyclone is forecast to make landfall over South Carolina early Sunday morning with the bulk of the heavy rain and thunderstorms pushing further north into the Carolinas through Sunday night/early Monday along with gusty winds. Isolated severe weather/tornadoes cannot be ruled out.
The potential for rain, high winds, and risk of tornadoes means the possibility of debris and flooded roadways. Remember to never drive through standing water…
