‘Extreme heat warning’ in place through Monday evening

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An “extreme heat warning” is in place for much of the South Carolina coastal area through Monday evening. A heat index value of 115 degrees is possible Sunday and Monday afternoon.

“We are heading into the hottest part of the summer, with temps potentially reaching 100 degrees on Sunday and Monday,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Brant Beckman. “If we reach 100 on Sunday, it will tie a daily record high.”

Beckman said that with a heat dome of high pressure in place, the risk of rainfall is low; however, he added that if an isolated thunderstorm does occur, there will be enough heat and moisture to fuel it.

“They may be on the stronger side with lots of rainfall and copious amounts of lightning,” he said. “Stay alert for those stray storms.”
