COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) — As temperatures soar, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department is urging the public to be vigilant about the dangers of leaving children and pets in hot vehicles.

The department warns that extreme heat can have deadly consequences, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and animals.

Deputies advise drivers to “stop, look in the backseat, and then lock your car” to ensure no one is left behind. They suggest placing an essential item, like a cellphone or keys, in the backseat with a child or pet as a reminder…
