Sistercare’s new short film raises awareness of domestic violence

Sistercare, a local nonprofit organization that serves domestic violence survivors and their children, released a bold and moving short film entitled “Just Left of Perfect.” The film premiered at the Nickelodeon Theater on Thursday, July 31 with an audience of Columbia’s most influential leaders, officials, and supporters.

Following a day in the life of a fictional woman experiencing intimate partner violence, “Just Left of Perfect” is designed to highlight the complex stressors, trials, trauma, and decisions that domestic violence (DV) victims face every day. In addition, the film illustrates how violence of this nature can hide in plain sight, deeply affecting victims who, from the outside, appear to have a “perfect” life.

Alarmingly, 42 percent of South Carolina women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime, and our state remains one of the top in the nation for the rate of women killed by men. Sistercare has been supporting domestic violence survivors and their children since 1981. In 2024, Sistercare served 3,881 domestic violence survivors and children across five counties by providing comprehensive services, including emergency shelter, 24/7 crisis line, legal representation and court advocacy, rural outreach, transitional housing, clinical counseling, and health services advocacy…
