‘It will forever change my life:’ Columbia man speaks out after being targeted in alleged hate crime shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The man who Richland County deputies said was targeted in a racially motivated attack is sharing his story for the first time and calling for change.

Jarvis McKenzie spoke Thursday alongside his attorney, Tyler Bailey, about the incident that happened on July 17 on Brookspring Road in northeast Richland County.

Investigators with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department say McKenzie, who is Black, was standing outside his home around 5:30 a.m. when a man stopped his car, looked at him, and opened fire.
