SCHP: Medical Event Caused Crash Involving South Congaree Police Chief

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) has confirmed that a medical emergency was the cause of a crash last week involving South Congaree Police Chief Steve Jonas.

The wreck occurred Wednesday evening around 6:15 p.m. on South Beltline Boulevard in Columbia. Investigators said Jonas experienced an “unforeseen medical event” that caused him to cross the center line and collide with a GMC SUV carrying three passengers.

Injuries and Hospitalizations

Jonas was transported to a local hospital along with the three individuals in the SUV. As of Saturday afternoon, town officials said the chief remained hospitalized.

Photographs taken by witnesses at the scene showed the damaged vehicles and emergency response.
