South Carolina trooper awarded Medal of Valor for stopping wrong-way driver on interstate

SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) — A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was recognized and honored for his courage after using his vehicle to stop a wrong-way driver.

Senior Trooper R.A. Lee was awarded with a Medal of Valor after making a last-minute decision on July 8 to use his vehicle to stop a fleeing suspect who was driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 77.

Lee was called to support a vehicle pursuit with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office that involved a vehicle stolen in North Carolina. Lee tried to stop the vehicle using a tire-deflation device along I-77, but the suspect was able to avoid the device by going the wrong direction on the highway.

Lee made the last-minute and heroic decision to drive his patrol truck directly into the path of the oncoming suspect. The truck was totaled, but Lee walked away from the scene with minor injuries, SCHP said…
