State seeks death penalty for man in new charges related to 2017 bank murders

CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) — Brandon Council, a 40-year-old serving a life sentence for the 2017 killing of two bank employees during an armed robbery, is facing new state charges as South Carolina seeks the death penalty.

State Solicitor Jimmy Richardson announced that Council waived his appearance during Tuesday’s hearing, where his defense team said Council wanted to plead not guilty and wished for him to undergo a second trial by a jury.

“I fully expected him to come out today and get served. It didn’t matter to me that he didn’t, as long as we complied with statutory laws. That’s fine by us, but I shouldn’t be surprised because everything is contentious at this point,” he said…
