Rabid raccoon confirmed in Laurens County, one cat exposed

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Laurens County.

The raccoon that tested positive for rabies was found near Simpson Creek and Neely Ferry roads in Laurens. One cat was exposed and will be quarantined as required in the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.

The Laurens County raccoon were submitted to DPH’s laboratory Oct. 2, 2025, and were confirmed to have rabies Oct. 3, 2025.
