Midlands food pantries brace for surge as SNAP benefit cuts loom

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Volunteers and food bank employees across the Midlands are working overtime as uncertainty grows over whether federal SNAP benefits will be distributed next month.

Local food pantry leaders say they’re already seeing the effects and are preparing for what could become an even larger wave of need.

At Mission Lexington, Chief Executive Officer Amy Reeves said requests for help have increased sharply as families stretch their budgets and prepare for the holidays. She said they typically serve around 2,000 people a month, but that number is climbing fast…
