COLUMBIA, S.C. — Part of Whaley Street in downtown Columbia will remain closed for several days after a garbage truck became wedged under a train trestle Thursday morning, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The incident happened near the intersections of Assembly and Whaley streets and Whaley and Main streets, prompting temporary closures in both directions. Police said there were no reported injuries.
In an update posted to X (formerly Twitter), police said Norfolk Southern engineers assessed the structure and determined that the eastbound section of Whaley Street will need to stay closed for several days while crews inspect and make any necessary repairs.
