Detention officer charged after alleged excessive force at Alvin S. Glenn

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says a detention officer at Alvin S. Glenn has been arrested and charged after investigators determined she used excessive force on two inmates.

According to RCSD, 52-year-old Latasha McClendon was taken into custody following a review of an incident reported to the department on November 6. Investigators say the incident happened on October 26 around 8:55 p.m. inside a cell at the jail, where Officer McClendon was involved in a verbal dispute with an inmate.

According to the release, McClendon sprayed a chemical irritant into the cell and then closed the flap door, leaving two inmates inside. After reviewing the evidence, investigators determined the use of force was excessive…
